6 Types of Cannabis Licenses in California



California was one of the first states in the USA to legalize cannabis for both medical and recreational use.

The Medicinal and Adult-Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act (MAUCRSA) is the main legislation which regulates the legal commercial medicinal and adult-use cannabis in California

The state of California has established a comprehensive system of licenses for the production, distribution, sale and other uses of cannabis products.

The 6 Licenses Available in California

Cultivation License

This license authorizes the holder to cultivate cannabis plants for medical or recreational purposes. There are two types of cultivation licenses: specialty cottage and small outdoor licenses for smaller operations, and medium and large indoor, mixed-light, and outdoor licenses for larger operations.

Manufacturing License

This license authorizes the holder to manufacture cannabis products, such as edibles, concentrates, and topicals. There are two types of manufacturing licenses: Type 6 for manufacturers who use non-volatile solvents, and Type 7 for manufacturers who use volatile solvents.

Distribution License

This license authorizes the holder to transport cannabis products from the cultivation or manufacturing facility to a dispensary or retailer. The holder may also store cannabis products temporarily.

Retail License

This license authorizes the holder to sell cannabis products directly to consumers. There are two types of retail licenses: storefront retail for brick-and-mortar dispensaries, and delivery retail for businesses that deliver cannabis products directly to consumers.

Testing License

This license authorizes the holder to test cannabis products for potency, purity, and contaminants. The applicant must demonstrate that they have the necessary equipment and expertise to conduct testing in accordance with California regulations.

Event Organizer License

This license authorizes the holder to organize events where cannabis products are sold or distributed. The applicant must demonstrate that they have the necessary expertise and security measures to organize a safe and legal cannabis event.
